James T. Meeks is a former Illinois Senate Democrat who represented County 15 from 2003 to 2013. He was also an active Baptist minister in Chicago and chaired the Da Legislative caucus. black of Illinois. He briefly campaigned for mayor of Chicago in the 2003 and 2011 elections, before dropping out of the race twice. Today, he has become a leading figure in the campaign to prevent same-sex marriage in Illinois. Meeks was appointed chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education by Governor Bruce Rauner and took office on January 21, 2017. He succeeds Gery Chico, who resigned last week.
